6 September: 249

Today is the 249th day of the year. 10 things you didn't know about the number 249:

  1. 249 in Roman numerals is CCXLIX.
  2. In Binary it's written 1111100.
  3. The London bus route 249 runs to Anerley station via The Pavement and Jasmine Grove.
  4. The year 249 was a common year starting on Monday known at the time as the Year of the Consulship of Gavius and Aquilinus. In this year, the Battle of Verona took place in which Decius defeated and killed Philip the Arab. Decius began persecuting Christians, and anyone else who refused to participate in Emperor worship.
  5. The A249 is a road in Kent, England, running from Maidstone to Sheerness on the Isle of Sheppey.
  6. Lot No. 249 is a Gothic horror short story by Arthur Conan Doyle, first published in Harper's Magazine in 1892. It's about a University of Oxford athlete named Abercrombie Smith who notices a strange series of events surrounding Edward Bellingham, an Egyptology student who happens to own some ancient Egyptian artefacts, including a mummy. Smith concludes that Bellingham is reanimating his mummy. Smith denies this is the case; the next day, Smith the mummy attacks Smith. He escapes and forces Bellingham to destroy his mummy and the associated artifacts at gunpoint. The story was written during a period of great European interest in Egyptian culture or Egyptomania, and inspired by Doyle's interests in the supernatural, crime and Egyptology.
  7. 249 Ilse is a Main belt asteroid discovered by C. H. F. Peters in 1885, and named after Ilse, a legendary German princess.
  8. The M249 is a light machine gun.
  9. If you come across an oval shaped white pill imprinted with the number 249, it's an Atorvastatin Calcium 10 mg supplied by Zydus Pharmaceuticals.
  10. In numerology this number resonates with home, family and harmony. Friends are also important to the person affected by the number, and they are most comfortable as part of a co-operative team.
