12 September: 255

Today is the 255th day of the year. 10 things you might not know about the number 255:

  1. In Binary, 255 is written 11111111.
  2. This actually makes it a special number in computing as it is the largest number which can be represented by an unsigned 8-bit byte, or octet.
  3. This is the reason why in the original Legend of Zelda game, Link can carry a maximum of 255 rupees.
  4. 255 Oppavia is a Main belt asteroid discovered by Johann Palisa in 1886 and named after Opava, a town in the Czech Republic, then part of Austria-Hungary, where Palisa was born.
  5. The A255 is a road in England which runs between Ramsgate and Broadstairs.
  6. The year 255 was a common year starting on Monday known at the time as the Year of the Consulship of Valerianus and Gallienus.
  7. London Bus route 255 runs between South Lodge Avenue / Yorkshire Road and Balham Station / Balham Station Road.
  8. At time of writing the inaugural 255 Triathlon was scheduled to take place on Sunday 8th August at Goodwood Motor Racing Circuit, West Sussex. 300 competitors would swim in Westhampnett Lake then complete 52 laps of the circuit on their Bicycles, and finally run ten laps of the circuit’s perimeter. Competitors would have up to 18 hours to complete the course.
  9. The Roman numeral for 255 is CCLV.
  10. In numerology, 255 resonates with creativity and teamwork. Creative projects undertaken with other people are what suits the person affected by the number best. They also have a tendency to assert their independence and act on a whim.
