3 September: 246

Today is the 246th day of the year. 10 things you might not know about the number 246:

  1. The Roman numeral for 246 is CCXLVI.
  2. London bus route 246 runs between Bromley North Station and Chartwell.
  3. The Ferrari 246 F1 is a Ferrari racing car built for the Formula One World Championship of 1958.
  4. The year 246 was a common year starting on Thursday known at the time as the Year of the Consulship of Praesens and Albinus.
  5. On April 14, 2014 a mathematical concept called "Zhang’s bound" was reduced to 246. It's to do with the gaps between prime numbers in astronomically high numbers. Yitang Zhang, the mathematician who came up with the concept showed that prime numbers get increasingly rare as the numbers get bigger, but you would never stop finding pairs of primes separated by at most 70 million. That gap has been falling ever since and of 14/4/2014 had dropped to 246.
  6. The A246 road runs between Leatherhead and Guildford.
  7. +246 is the code for international direct dial phone calls to British Indian Ocean Territory (Diego Garcia).
  8. 246 Asporina is a main-belt Asteroid discovered by A. Borrelly in 1885 and named after Asporina, a goddess worshipped in Asia Minor. The spectrum of 246 Asporina reveals the strong presence of the mineral olivine, a relative rarity in the asteroid belt.
  9. In Binary, 246 is written 11110110.
  10. In numerology, 246 represents creative expression and harmony. People affected by the number like to feel they belong to a group or a family. Teamwork and expression of ideas is important.
