17 August: 229

Today is the 229th day of the year. 10 things you might not know about the number 229:

  1. There are 229 letters which are always consonants in the names of the 50 US states (that is every letter except A E I O U W and Y).
  2. The A229 is a major road running through Kent from Rochester to Hawkhurst via Maidstone. It is a former Roman road that ran from Rochester to Hastings. Part of it is known as Blue Bell Hill, which is said to be the most haunted road in Britain. The usual story is that a driver picks up a lone female hitch-hiker, and at some point turns to look in the rear view mirror only to find she's vanished. Sometimes the driver will find a purse or handbag. When they arrive at the address the hitcher gave them they will be told that the person they picked up had been dead for several years.
  3. 229 Adelinda is a large, outer main-belt Asteroid discovered by Johann Palisa in 1882, and was named after Adelinda, the wife of fellow Austrian astronomer Edmund Weiss.
  4. 229 is the telephone area code for Albany, GeorgiaUSA.
  5. In London the 229 bus runs between Thamesmead Town Centre and Queen Mary's Hospital, Chislehurst Road.
  6. Also in London, 229 is a Music venue which has hosted gigs by Kings of Leon, Paul Weller, Florence and the Machine, Biffy Clyro, Seasick Steve and more as well as being a venue for award ceremonies and gala dinners. All the profits made are used to support their underlying mission, which is to provide scholarships and support to students.
  7. The year 229 was a common year starting on a Thursday, known at the time as the Year of the Consulship of Severus and Cassius.
  8. 229 as a Roman numeral is CCXXIX and in Binary it's 11100101.
  9. 229 is the highest you can score in a standard game of bowling if the score in each of the ten frames is required to be a prime number.
  10. In numerology this number resonates with co-operation and relationships, in particular, team work for the accomplishment of a goal. The person affected by the number is pragmatic, realistic and diplomatic.
