10 weird and wonderful things which happened on 12 September:

1. On this date in 1846, Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning were secretly married at London's St. Marylebone Church. William Wordsworth commented: "Well, I hope they understand one another – nobody else would."
2. Johann Moritz of Prussia patented the tuba on this date in 1835.
3. In 2016, Barack Obama had a new species of parasite named after him: Baracktrema obamai.
4. The space shuttle Endeavour blasted off on this date in 1992. On board were Mark Lee and Jan Davis, the first married couple to go to space together; Mae Jemison, the first black woman in space; and Mamoru Mohri, the first Japanese citizen to fly on an American spacecraft.
5. In 2013, NASA announced the Voyager 1 space probe had left the solar system becoming the first man-made object to reach interstellar space.
6. In 2011, British comedian David Walliams completed a 140-mile charity swim along the River Thames, raising £1 million for Sport Relief.
7. Mrs. Alice Stebbins Wells, a former social worker, became the first policewoman with full powers of arrest and a uniform in the Los Angeles Police Department on this date in 1910. At that time, Los Angeles police could use their badge as a free pass on street-cars when riding to work. Unfortunately, Mrs Stebbins was invariably accused of misusing her husband's badge to ride the street-car for free. When her supervisors heard of her problem they issued her with "Policewoman's Badge No. 1."
8. In 1379, Philip the Bold pardoned two herds of Pigs which had been condemned to death as accomplices in the killing of a child by a sow.
9. In 1878, Cleopatra's Needle was erected on the Thames Embankment in London.
10. In 1940, four teenagers followed their dog down a hole near Lascaux in France, and discovered the 17,000 year-old drawings which are now known as the Lascaux cave paintings.
