 10 weird and wonderful things which happened on 10 September:

  1. Born on this date in 1801 was Marie LaveauLouisiana practitioner of Voudou renowned in New Orleans. The group Redbone wrote their hit single Witch Queen Of New Orleans in her honour.
  2. Empress Elisabeth of Austria, 44, was assassinated on this date in 1898 by anarchist Luigi Luccheni. He stabbed her in the heart with a metal file. She didn't know she was bleeding to death because she was so tightly strapped into her corset.
  3. In 1995, Ismail Ayyildiz, aged 33, died in a Turkish hospital from head wounds incurred when he tried to shoot out a bad tooth.
  4. The UK’s heaviest Spider, weighing 2.25gm, was found in Sussex on this date in 1979.
  5. In 1891, two ice workers in Crawfordsville, Indiana had seen a glowing object floating overhead for several nights. On this night they claimed to witness a "headless monster" about 20 feet long which made its way with "fin-like attachments". A Methodist pastor also saw it.
  6. The Limerick Stone, the heaviest meteorite to fall in Ireland (106lb) fell in a meteor shower near Adare, Co Limerick on this date in 1813.
  7. In 1846, Elias Howe, a farmer, patented the first practical Sewing machine. His machine could stitch five times faster than by hand.
  8. On this date in 1945, in Fruita, Colorado, farmer Lloyd Olsen went out to kill a Chicken for dinner. He chopped its head off with an axe, but the headless chicken started running around and never stopped. Dubbed 'Mike the Headless Chicken', the bird became famous. Mr. Olsen charged people 25 cents to see Mike running about. Mike was fed a mixture of Water and Milk with an eyedropper, and occasionally got a treat of corn. Mike finally died in 1947, after living for 18 months.
  9. In 1995, a survey showed that one in three British children believed their mum preferred their Cat to their dad.
  10. In 1997, an electric chair, which was used in Alcatraz and once owned by Andy Warhol, sold for £4,800 at an auction in Bristol. Warhol used to sit in the chair to watch horror movies.
