Machiavelli

  1. This date in 1469 saw the birth of Niccolo di Bernardo dei Machiavelli, Italian statesman, best known for his work The Prince, which was responsible for the term "Machiavellian". Some say the expression “Old Nick” for the Devil also originated with him.

  2. Christopher Columbus discovered Jamaica on this date in 1494. He named it "St Iago".

  3. In 1997 Katrina And The Waves won the Eurovision song contest in Dublin with the song Love Shine A Light, making them the first UK winners since Bucks Fizz in 1981.

  4. The fastest tornado ever recorded hit the suburbs of Oklahoma City on this date in 1999. Its speed reached 318 MPH or 509 KM/H.

  5. The first toll bridge in the US opened this date in 1654. A bridge in Rowley, Massachusetts, was permitted to charge a toll for animals, while people crossed for free.

  6. The first landing by an aeroplane at the geographic North Pole by Joseph Fletcher and William Benedict took place on this date in 1952.

  7. In 1675, a law was enacted in Massachusetts requiring church doors to be locked during services, to stop people leaving before the end of long sermons.

  8. In 1747, the Battle of Cape Finisterre took place, at which the British defeated the French.

  9. The first duel fought from two Hot air balloons took place above Paris on this date in 1808. The shots were carefully aimed, and a Monsieur Le Pique was killed.

  10. In 1944, the Daily Telegraph Crossword solution included the word Utah, a secret code word for a landing beach for the planned invasion of France. Over the next few days, other code words relating to the invasion appeared in the puzzle, and agents questioned the puzzle setter. They established he was not a spy but no-one could explain the coincidences.



The Power of Love


Willow believes in crystal healing, cosmic  ordering  and the significance of chance  encounters. She believes there's a spiritual  explanation for everything. Except she struggles to find a reason why she can turn herself into  mist and create a wave of energy which can slam a would-be mugger into a wall. Or why the love of  her life left her for a mysterious woman in sunglasses, who then disappeared without trace. 
 

A chance encounter with Firebolt, leader of the Freedom League superhero team, in a Glastonbury coffee shop, does turn out to be significant. He offers her a new start and the chance to use her powers for good.

Servant is a Christian who has joined the Freedom League in order to use his teleporting power to serve God. He and Willow clash from the start, yet they are drawn inexorably to one another.

When Willow leaves the team abruptly for reasons unknown, Servant knows he must put her out of his mind and find a nice Christian girl to settle down with. He is about to propose to devout and straight-laced Ruth, when Willow returns and turns his entire world upside down.
