14 May

10 weird and wonderful things which happened on 14 May:

  1. Born on this date in 1944 was George Lucas, American film director, producer and screenwriter. He is the creator of the Star Wars saga and the archaeologist-adventurer character Indiana Jones. He said, "Dreams are extremely important. You can't do it unless you imagine it."

  2. Also born on this date, somewhat earlier in 1265, was the Italian poet Dante Alighieri. His most famous work, the Divine Comedy, is considered the greatest literary work composed in the Italian language. He wrote the famous line: "Abandon every hope, ye who enter here."

  3. In 1976, former Yardbirds lead singer and co-founder Renaissance Keith Relf, 33, was electrocuted. He was playing guitar while taking a Bubble bath in his West London home, and was found beside a plugged-in electric Guitar by his 8 year old son.

  4. In 1796 Edward Jenner carried out his first successful vaccination against smallpox, on a boy called James Phipps, with a small dose of cowpox fluid from a pustule from the hand of a milkmaid, Sarah Nelmes, who had been infected by her master’s Cows. Jenner's vaccine was eventually used to eradicate smallpox worldwide.

  5. In 1939, Lina Medina gave birth. The unusual thing about this was that Lina was just 5 years, 7 months, and 21 days old, making her the youngest confirmed mother in medical history. Not to mention a victim of child abuse.

  6. In 1973, the Skylab I space laboratory was launched into earth orbit by the last Saturn 5 booster rocket. The station's successful mission proved that humans could live and work in space for extended periods of time.

  7. Two Olympic firsts occurred on this date. In 1900, the second Modern Olympic Games opened in Paris, with women allowed to take part for the first time; and in 1904 The Olympic Games were held in the United States for the first time, at St. Louis, Missouri.

  8. It was on this date in 1767 that the British government imposed a tax on importing Tea into America, which would lead to the ‘Boston Tea Party’ and the American War of Independence.

  9. In 1884, the Anti-Monopoly party was formed in the US. (The anti-Cluedo and anti-Trivial Pursuit parties presumably came later.)

  10. In 1996, robbers made off with 7,200 diarrhoea tablets. (The thieves, presumably, are still on the run...)

The Power of Love

Willow believes in crystal healing, cosmic  ordering  and the significance of chance  encounters. She believes there's a spiritual  explanation for everything. Except she struggles to find a reason why she can turn herself into  mist and create a wave of energy which can slam a would-be mugger into a wall. Or why the love of  her life left her for a mysterious woman in sunglasses, who then disappeared without trace.

A chance encounter with Firebolt, leader of the Freedom League superhero team, in a Glastonbury coffee shop, does turn out to be significant. He offers her a new start and the chance to use her powers for good.

Servant is a Christian who has joined the Freedom League in order to use his teleporting power to serve God. He and Willow clash from the start, yet they are drawn inexorably to one another.

When Willow leaves the team abruptly for reasons unknown, Servant knows he must put her out of his mind and find a nice Christian girl to settle down with. He is about to propose to devout and straight-laced Ruth, when Willow returns and turns his entire world upside down.
