4 January

10 weird and wonderful things which happened on 4th January:

The Burj Khalifa

  1. On this date in 1988, the mustache growing championship in India proved to be quite literally a cut-throat competition. Karni Bheel, the winner, was murdered and his head, complete with his 7ft 10in mustache, was removed. The rest of his corpse was found in a cart in west Rajasthan city.
  2. In 1642 King Charles I and 400 soldiers attacked the English parliament, demanding that John Hampden, an MP, and 4 others who’d protested against paying taxes be handed over. They’d already legged it through the back door. The Civil War began soon afterwards.
  3. In 1997 in the Boulder Canyon Café, USA, a cinnamon bun was seen which resembled Mother Teresa.
  4. In London, on this date in 1957, a man was sentenced ten years in prison. He’d had a nose job, but didn’t like the result. He thought the surgeon had made his nose too short and so he threatened him with a gun.
  5. In 1887 Thomas Stevens arrived back in San Francisco, becoming the first man to cycle around the world. The trip had taken him 2 years and 8 months.
  6. In 1937 a motorcyclist called Angelo Hayes was declared dead after a crash and buried. Two days later, his insurance company asked for the body to be exhumed and an autopsy done. On the autopsy table, Angelo was found to be still alive. He made a full recovery and went on to invent the “security coffin” with an air line and communication channel for people concerned that they might end up being buried alive.
  7. In 2001 Madame Tussaud's waxworks in London revealed their “Most Hated Characters” list. In third place, behind Adolph Hitler and Slobodan Milosevic was Oasis singer Liam Gallagher.
  8. In 1982 Erika Rowe famously ran across the pitch during an England v. Australia rugby match, stark naked.
  9. On this date in 2010 the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building, was officially opened. It’s so tall that on the higher floors, the sun sets three minutes later than at ground level.
  10. On 4 January 1972 Rose Heilbron became Britain’s first woman judge at the Old Bailey.

NEW!!

The Power of Love

Willow believes in crystal healing, cosmic  ordering  and the significance of chance  encounters. She believes there's a spiritual  explanation for everything. Except she struggles to find a reason why she can turn herself into  mist and create a wave of energy which can slam a would-be mugger into a wall. Or why the love of  her life left her for a mysterious woman in sunglasses, who then disappeared without trace.

A chance encounter with Firebolt, leader of the Freedom League superhero team, in a Glastonbury coffee shop, does turn out to be significant. He offers her a new start and the chance to use her powers for good.

Servant is a Christian who has joined the Freedom League in order to use his teleporting power to serve God. He and Willow clash from the start, yet they are drawn inexorably to one another.

When Willow leaves the team abruptly for reasons unknown, Servant knows he must put her out of his mind and find a nice Christian girl to settle down with. He is about to propose to devout and straight-laced Ruth, when Willow returns and turns his entire world upside down.
